Job Title: Executive Director of the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation

Job Type: Full-Time, Salaried

Job Summary:

The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation is located in El Paso, Texas and exists to reduce the burden of cancer on the El Paso County, Texas community through financial support and the development of programs for advocacy, education, early detection and survivorship issues for cancer patients and their families.

The organization is a designated 501(c)(3) public charity under IRS tax determination number 23-7105159 and has been in existence since April 1, 1996.

The Executive Director of the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of the foundation. The executive director is the leader and chief spokesperson for the organization. The executive director reports to and is accountable to the president of the board and the board of directors. The executive director’s primary responsibilities include strategic planning and implementation of the strategic initiatives through tactical actions. The responsibilities should be carried out in accordance with the directions provided by the board of directors and within established guidelines so that organizational, fundraising, budgetary, community relations and volunteer objectives are achieved.

Time Responsibilities:

20% Serves as the principal professional resource to the board of directors and key committees, assisting them in matters of policy formulation and interpretation. Communicates regularly and openly with the board. Creates a culture of partnership between board and staff based on genuine trust and respect for each other’s contributions of time, talent and resources. Implements the policies established by the board of directors through the administration of the organization and its activities. Participates in board meetings (i.e., providing input, information and feedback as the organization’s liaison).

20% Manages the operation of the organization, including staff, programs and oversight for the physical location. Directs professional staff by delegating responsibilities as necessary to effectively serve the organization’s clients and accomplish its goals. Charged with hiring, evaluating, administering employee benefits and handling other personnel matters. Develops, establishes and utilizes organizational performance measurement standards

15% Provides oversight for the financial affairs of the organization. This includes, but is not limited to, preparation of the budget, statements of financial position and profit and loss statements. Ensures financial policies and procedures are followed. Serves as primary support to the finance committee. Ensures ongoing financial growth of the organization through deliberate fundraising planning.

15% Leads the development and implementation of strategic plans into tactical actions/activities.

20% Oversees all fundraising efforts including donor recruitment, third party fundraisers and Rio Grande Cancer Foundation revenue generating activities

10% Acts as the chief spokesperson for the organization

Education and Training:

University degree required. Five to seven years demonstrated successful management and supervisory experience, preferably in the non-profit sector. Understanding of non-profit regulations, financial statements, budgeting process and accounting procedures. Experience in strategic planning. Strong organization and analytical abilities. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Board members, staff, as well as with external agencies, consultants and vendors.

Required Skills:

  • Computer skills (spreadsheet, word processing, Microsoft Teams/ZOOM capabilities, graphic presentations).
  • Leadership experience, excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of public relations, marketing and community education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with donors, fundraisers and giving campaigns.


The compensation package includes salary commensurate with experience, benefits which include medical insurance and pension plans as well as PTO and a work environment where employees feel at ease and appreciated.
