June is Cancer Survivor month

Millions of people are living with cancer. Researchers estimate more than 18 million people in the United States alone will be living with cancer by the year 2022. As our population ages, that number may grow even higher.

In 1996, the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship pioneered the definition of cancer survivor as being any person diagnosed with cancer, from the time of initial diagnosis until death. They later expanded the definition to include family, friends and caregivers who are touched by a cancer diagnosis in any way.

This month we celebrate Cancer Survivor Month; It is a celebration of overcoming challenges, facing fears and embracing life through and after cancer a cancer experience.

If you or a loved one has been touched by cancer, please contact the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation for more information about our 2016 Survive and Thrive Cancer Survivor Conference, August 20 at the El Paso Wyndham Hotel. This year, we have added a professional component to the conference. CEU credits will be available for a separate healthcare professional segment of the conference. Informative, entertaining and inspiring speakers and workshops will help to illuminate the many aspects of cancer survivorship. Tickets and information is available by calling 915-562-7660.
